Visual storytelling played a pivotal role in shaping how we, as viewers, experienced the Games. The photographs were not just records of achievement, they were expressions of the human spirit in motion.

Behind every iconic Olympic photograph is a photographer’s patience, skill, and instinct. The visual syntax of these images often tells as much about the photographer’s dedication as it does about the subject being captured. Waiting for the perfect moment, the photographer must anticipate the ending of a race, the precise second when emotion breaks through an athlete’s focus or the exact point when victory or defeat comes across a competitor’s face.

For instance, an image taken from a low angle of a kayaker mid-stride, muscles tensed in concentration, tells a story of raw power and determination. I didn’t have any ethical concerns with any of the images I used. However, one thing that remained at the forefront of my mind was the importance of properly crediting photographers, publishers, and the athletes featured in the photographs. The effort behind each photograph—the skill of the photographer and the consent of the athletes—must be acknowledged to ensure ethical integrity in storytelling.

Moreover, curating these images required careful consideration of the narrative being presented. For example, starting with images from the opening ceremony that set the stage, such as the city’s venue, followed by dynamic action shots, and concluding with celebratory moments of victory creates a cohesive storyline.

Rearranging the images would have altered the narrative, shifting the journey from hope and celebration to something less emotionally resonant, perhaps beginning with victory but ending on a bittersweet note. In visual storytelling, sequencing is just as important as the content of the images themselves.

Preserving Legacy: Standing the Test of Time

Visual reporting is still extremely impactful even in an oversaturated market. When taking a still photograph or recording a moment on film, every person has a unique perspective and may be able to tell part of the story differently than what was already shared.

The Paris 2024 Olympics offered a unique opportunity to witness the intersection of sports and culture, as photographers captured moments that went beyond the stadiums, portraying human emotion, perseverance, and the power of collective unity.
